This morning, just 62 years ago, Byrd and his Ice Party members, including Yours Truly, sailed up the Bay to the D.C. Navy Yard...

Of interest perhaps...?? “Seaman” Young, in the photo helpimg Alton A. Lindsey weigh seals, was known as Bob Young. The first edition of the official (?) book on Antarctic Place names assumed his H.R. initials meant he was “Robert”. In the second edition they corrected it to Richard, but then assumed the H was for “Henry”. Perhaps the third edition will get it correct: Harry Richard Young was my late uncle’s full name! (Anybody interested in accessing H.R. Young’s “narrative account” of the Second Byrd Antartcic Expedition, with some biographical stuff on HRY(a long-time resident of New Zealand, who died in 1966 - and I am still hoping his 1933-35 DIARY will turn up one day!!), should drop me a line…
