3. IPY Science Day: Changing Earth, March 12th 2007

Many thanks to all who participated in the December Ice Sheet Day. The next IPY Science Day, on March 12th, will focus on the Changing Earth, on time scales from decades to centuries to millenia.  If you would like to have your IPY Project profiled, share resources, participate in web or video conferences, or be available for media during that week, please email Rhian (ipy.ras@gmail.com).

4. Association of Polar Early Career Scientists

The January newsletter for APECS will be available on Friday, Jan 10th at http://arcticportal.org/apecs/apecs-news.

In Brief:

APECS works to set up the membership profile of the APECS website to facilitate the development of collaborations and sharing of resources.  The website now includes a geographic job posting feature that includes a map to help applications find job openings by location.  If you have a job to post or an opportunity to share, please email APECSinfo@gmail.com.

Fifty (50) young researchers from 14 countries met from the 29 November to 2 December 2007 in the Otto Schmidt Laboratory for Polar and Marine Sciences at the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, St. Petersburg, to learn the latest methods used in permafrost research and engineering and to discuss future plans to address climate change issues in permafrost areas.  This workshop was an official International Polar Year (IPY) event organized jointly by the Otto-Schmidt Laboratory for Polar and Marine Sciences in St. Petersburg, the Permafrost Young Researchers Network (PYRN) and APECS.

If you would like to become more involved in any of the APECS international or regional working groups, please visit www.arcticportal.org/apecs/get-involved or contact the APECS Director, Jenny Baeseman: jbaeseman@gmail.com.

5. Videos on IPY.org

IPY.org now is developing capacity to show videos that have been uploaded to You Tube. If you have material that you would like featured on these pages, please send the You Tube link to Rhian (ipy.ras@gmail.com). A developmental page, with videos from a recent IPY Joint Committee meeting, can be seen at: /index.php?/ipy/videos (also navigable from the ‘browse by’ menu).
