On May 10 there will be a concert in Madrid to celebrate IPY, the 50th anniversary of SCAR and the 20th anniversary of Spanish Antarctic research.

Organised by Universidad Autonoma de Madrid and the Spanish National SCAR Committee, the concert will be held at the National Music Auditorium, where the audience will hear the Sinfonia Antartica of Vaughan Williams for the first time in Spain as a part of the concert. It is for general public and we expect a broad participation of the Spanish polar community and students. The hall has a capacity of 2,200 people.

Attached are two PDF brochures about the concert: one and two. The information is also accesible from this page.

Live from IPY with PolarTREC

The folks at PolarTREC have lined up a series of virtual expeditions during IPY, with researchers sharing their insights and findings from the field with teachers and students in classrooms and anyone else interested in getting a glimpse of how research is conducted in polar places. The program, Live from IPY! , transports participants to remote polar locations through live from the field calls and Internet presentations. The first expeditions focus on the Bering Ecosystem Study (BEST) and Greenland, and the website has a wealth of information and images from completed expeditions.

Live from IPY! utilizes an Internet platform that supports real-time online presentations, audio, and chat functions to allow for interaction with teachers and researchers during their PolarTREC expeditions. Anyone can register for these events and participation is free. Each live event is also archived for downloading and viewing. Instructions on how to view an archived event are posted under the ‘Archived Events’ tab.
